While sifting through the big box of CDs that never received a proper burial, I ran across "Salt And Sugar," an album by Madison's legendary 'Alternative To Everything Rockers,' The Gomers. Melding serious musicianship with flabbergasting humor, they will stop at nothing to get a laugh, and parody everything from a lacking father figure in "My Dad" to bastardizing the Star Trek theme in "Start Wreck." The disc is a technical masterpiece, recorded at Smart Studios, engineered by Mike Zirkel and produced by The Gomers, it can be polka, heavy, psychedelic, jazzy, rock….or just non-label-able. The enhanced disc sports 14 tunes and features videos of "Hey What's The Big Idea," a very funny video, and "Perpetually," a more artistic video that reminded me of the alternative stuff I saw while attending the University. I doubt the Gomers will win any awards for "Most Original Band," but they ought to.
