JAMES MATHUS & HIS KNOCKDOWN SOCIETY
National Anticeptic

The second solo release of Squirrel Nut Zipper's frontman is a radical departure from what SNZ fans have come to expect of the big band leader (especially those not familiar with his first solo record, the Charlie Patton-inspired Songs for Rosetta) but in a good way. After hitting the road as legendary Buddy Guy's rhythm guitarist, James Mathus decided to record his own Delta juke-joint Boogie-woogie album, and it is as beautifully true to the genre as a skinny white boy can possibly get. It's sweet and gritty, loud when it needs to be, and sure to stun anyone who thinks they've got this guy's sound pinned down.
