THE PROMISE RING

Wood/Water
Anti-Epitaph Records

In essence, emo has been around since Echo and the Bunnymen and somewhere along the line emo took a wrong turn.  The music stayed somewhat interesting, but why do all the vocalist sound like they're getting their nose hairs pulled out? The Promise Ring could easily be called one of the premier emo bands just because vocalist Davey VonBohlen can actually sing half of the time. Wood/Water is a slightly intriguing release, loaded with odd instruments and arrangements that are reminisant of the mid-era The Walkabouts (quite possible the longest running "emo-type" bands still around) with a dash of Stereolab vaguely thrown in.                                      David A.
