The Gomers - September 2002

Madison's The Gomers

Rising from the primordial ooze of musical wiseacres, the Gomers are as venerable a Madison institution as Mickey's Dairy Bar. Sixteen years and weekly gigs of sonic irreverence behind them, they have gone on to families, careers and bands such as Reptile Palace Orchestra and NoahJohn.  A new studio effort, "Salt and Sugar," available at the www.beeftone.com brings them back to the limelight and into the clutches of MAXIMUM INK where we cornered bassist Gordon Ranney and stringmeister Biff Blumfumgagnge.

Maximum Ink: With everyone involved in other projects, what does it take to turn into a Gomer?

Gordon: All it takes for me to become a Gomer is the first 9 notes of "Sgt. Carter".  After that, all's right with the world.

Biff:  it's a bit like... Bruce Banner, when angered, turns green and giant. But not jolly. Not a jolly green giant, more like an incredible... Hulk of sorts. That's the Gomers way. Oh and the drugs help. Lots and lots of the goooood stuff. Not the wank-dank.

MI: Will there be a theme for your appearance at Bomblastica 2002.5?

Biff: Pretty sure we're going to do something with metal but we have a few killer themes in wait... So the Majestic is going to be a new club venue? Now that would be great. An affordable, smaller Barrymore... it would be great to see Tom Waits in the Majestic, eh?

Gordon: Well, since we're nearly at the finish of our "Have A Nice Day" tour, we'll probably pull out something special for the people. Best bring rubber gloves and Lysol.

MI: What's the worst piece of advice you have gotten from a "successful" person?

Biff
: Whatever happened to posters on poles around town? Was there some "Clean Pole Mafia" that decided to clean all the poles? Why do the whims of some anal-retentive, possibly deranged group affect the quality of my life? Case in point: The telephone poles on the corner of Williamson and Atwood. Why are these poles unable to support poster life? When did Madison become a little right wing town full of folk Nazis and clean pole fanatics? I'm serious here. It's all the ALRC can do to bust down great venues like the East End - and then some shmuck is tearing down posters for bands playing at one of the few other venues left in town at this point. It's insane and it really must stop.

MI: Does the band have a motto, guiding light or mascot?

Biff: Squeaky the Clown is our mascot. Gordon watches The Guiding Light.

Gordon: Motto: "GO-O-O-LLY!!!"; Mascot: Gomer Pyle, USMC;  Guiding Light: Jim Nabors was never on that show. My personal muse, when it comes to the Gomers, is the vast stable of K-Tel records I've amassed over the years, with such timeless classics as Sammy Johns' "Chevy Van", Dan Hill's "Sometimes When We Touch", and of course Pilot's classic, "Magic".  Other than that, I just let my mind go blank before we play, rehearse, or drive anywhere.

MI: If you could invite anyone up on stage with you and hand them any instrument, who would you invite and what instrument would it be?

Gordon: Ted Nugent, and a forceps.

Biff: I'd invite L. Shankar on stage and hand him a 10 string electric violin. oh yeah. did you know SWAMP THING got him on a track on their Cow Come True LP? Those flucky luckers.
