Kulczyk's Korner - January 2007

James Brown RIP 2006

I was fortunate in 2006, because no close friends of mine died this year.  The one person that I was acquainted with that did pass away was Erik Kleven, who was the ultimate bassist (stand-up, electric and tuba) and music instructor. Over the years he had played with Bo Diddley, The Henry Robinett Group, The Camelia Symphony, Nagual, Cab Calloway and Anton Barbeau. Erik died in a fiery head on collision on his way to a show outside of Sacramento.  He had been a fill-in bassist for Nevada Backwards and had just joined the band full-time when he was killed. Over the years Kleven taught 100’s of bassist how to play, inspired 1,000’s and was always a pleasure to be around.  He could not hide his joy when he played.  Rest In Peace Mr. Kleven.
