Stayin’ Alive: We managed to catch a nearly sold out Galactic show at the Barrymore Theatre, Madison, WI. Lots of crowd pleasing sexy sax work, with a jammy funk bent. Just not my vibe I guess; I left wanting more.
Hooray for High Noon Saloon: The new club resurrected out of the strewn ashes of O’Cayz Corral and is located at 701 East Washington St. (in the old Buy and Sell shop space) Madison, WI. Shows are booked for May - more info at www.high-noon.com
A spanker for the Anchor Inn: Ironically, we ended up at what must have been the last show at the Anchor Inn. Mr. Blues (club owner) was evicted for not paying rent. The Red Swan, No Mas, U.S. Maple show was packed and smokin’.
EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN “Perpetuum Mobile” (Mute) These German industrial grandfathers again bring us a variety of throbbing percussive structures with ambience and perseverance, plus sparse haunting melodies. Think “Blue Man Group” minus pretty. (7) (NOTE: appearing 4/30 at the Metro in Chicago) www.neubauten.org

HYPOCRISY “The Arrival” (Nuclear Blast) Alien enlightened death metal from the Swedish metal legends. Slow at times to the point of doom, but always heavy, compelling, complex and moody. (7) www.hypocrisy.tv

This month we have 11 X 25. We all love the hyper short reviews! 10 - good, 5 - average, 1 - bad
FLESHCRAWL “Made of Flesh” (Metal Blade) Tuned down, deep and heavy Swedish band pumps out melodic, yet way brutal death metal. Like early “Entombed,” with bonus blood, guts and flesheating. Yaarrggh! (6) www.fleshcrawl.de
BAD ACID TRIP “Lynch the Weirdo” (Serjical Strike/Columbia) Melodic and creative, yet disquieting and disturbing punk/metal/grindcore. Think spastic yet socially conscious Muppets with variable speed vibrators. Gotta love it! (9) www.badacidtrip.com
BARREN CROSS “State of Control” (Restless/Ryko) Re-release from a below average faux Christian hair metal band. Very cheesy. Dated sound with poor recording and production. Why? (1) www.barrencross.com
BEFORE THE DAWN “My Darkness” (Locomotive) Sad and sorrowful gothic metal from Finland with a variety of male vocal variations and styles. Full sounding and accessible. Worthy of repeated listens. (8) www.beforethedawn.com
DAEDELUS “Of Snowonia” (Plug Research) An amazing DJ and one man band. Melodic yet experimental. Jazzy yet techno. Ambient yet sinister. Think of fresh and striking Aphex Twin type curiosities and melodic madness. Yummy! (8) www.daedelusdarling.com
GORGOROTH “Twilight of the Idols” (Nuclear Blast) Grisly black metal with all the corpse paint intact. Evil intoned buzzing guitar riffs, gruff production, thundering drums and demonic vocals. Oh ya, hail Satan! (6) www.gorgoroth.org
HOOCH “Kick the Dog” (Hooch Music) La Crosse, WI spews forth this bluesy, hip, emotional rock outfit. Sparse on details, but heavy on the groove. Have a beer and score some Hooch! (5) www.gethooched.com
IFIHADAHIFI “No More Music” (Contraphonic) Self dubbed “Noise Disco.” This Wisconsin 4 piece rips it up with crusty chords, a punky attitude, an artsy rock fervor and strangely danceable noisescapes. (5) www.ifihadahifi.net
HEX “Spoonful of Voodoo” (Hex Music) Surreal gothic art house rock with techno and dance elements, layered with ethereal poetic female vocals. Soundtrack worthy! Members reside in NYC and Paris. (7) http://hexmusic.free.fr
