Rachael Davis - January 2005

Rachael Davis

Every once in awhile, a musician comes around that defies labeling. Boston musician by way of Northern Michigan, Rachael Davis is one of those musicians. One fourth folkie, one forth-jazz diva and a whole lot of Americana lady, the 22-year-old Davis has been singing on stage since the age of two. An alumnus of the world famous Interlochen Center for the Arts outside of Traverse City, MI, Davis sings like a wounded angel at a phone booth at the bus stop in Lonesome Town. Accompanying herself with the guitar and banjo, Davis just came back from a tour of Germany. I interviewed Rachael Davis via e-mail and telephone in late December...

MAX INK: What was the first song on the radio that you remember loving?
RACHAEL DAVIS: Well, I grew up in a public radio house. I never listened to commercial radio, I still don’t. But the earliest thing I remember loving was Felix Mendelssohn’s “Overture to the Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I actually called in and requested it once.

MI: How did attending Interlochen improve your musical abilities?
RD: When I went to Interlochen I wanted to go into musical theater. It’s a little known fact that I was in the theater department at Interlochen. Towards the beginning of their year the department had an alumnus who was a struggling actress and came in to speak. After hearing her story, I was like, “I think I’ll stick to what I know I can do,” so I started playing guitar and banjo and started to write more songs. So in that sense it unintentionally steered me in the right direction.

MI: What was it like to study at Interlochen Arts Academy?  Are there mean girls there?
RD: Interlochen was one of the greatest times of my life. Because I have a connection to that place there are still people that I meet that I am instantly akin to because we have Interlochen in common. One of my music friends in Boston, I just found out has a connection to that place. I’ve known him for a little while and when I told him I went to Interlochen, he asked me if I knew any of these people he went to Oberlin with. It turns out he was really good friends with my roommate from Interlochen! Things like that happen because of Interlochen. I guess there were mean girls there. I mean, it was high school, but it was a bunch of driven artist kids. We all kind of had this mutual respect for one another. We all were like total misfits in our hometowns and here was high school where all the kids were like us. It was pretty sweet.

MI: Are you one of those spooky talents that have a superhuman power to come up with melodies?
RD: It’s different most of the time. Sometimes the melodies come first and sometimes the words. Sometimes they come together. But there always has to be the inspiration. It comes from something I hear someone say or an idea that I think would make a good song.

MI:  What is in your CD player right now?
RD: The newest release by The Band, the greatest band of all time!  It has all this old live stuff and previously unreleased stuff like Levon Helm with Ronnie Hawkins and outtakes from recording sessions in like ‘69.

Rachael Davis performs at Cafe Montmartre in Madison Jan. 20, the L.R.C. Theater in Rhinelander Jan. 21, Bo Diddley’s Deli in St. Cloud, MN, Jan. 24, Gingko Coffeehouse in St. Paul, MN, Jan. 26 and at the Nisswa Community Center in Nisswa, MN, Jan. 27.
