"I've never supported him and certainly would never vote for him. I think he's a fool and a man without forethought. I have no confidence in him whatsoever. I think he's an idiot, I really do. Jason Webley - February 2006

Jason Webley

After you have seen a couple of thousand bands play live, it is really hard to get that spark back that you had when you first started going to shows. That excitement that you felt in the pit of your stomach like something was happening right where you are, in your little town or city, and it didn't get any better than that. Eventually, everyone gets jaded, then disinterested and finally annoyed. The trick is to keep being jaded, stay somewhat disinterested, be annoyed at the music that sucks and stay amused with music that you have never experienced before.

Jason Webley is one of those musicians that amuses me, and not in one of those “ha ha” kind of ways. Dark and tall, with baggy clothes hiding his scarecrow frame, Webley is a songwriter and enthusiastic performer with five CDs under his belt. With a voice like a bartender who has spent years yelling over the jukebox while doing shots of Jim Beam, Webley, with either his accordion or acoustic guitar, can turn the most jaded audience into putty in his hands.

Webley was in college when the accordion bug bit him. “I was working on the music for a production of the Caucasian Chalk Circle by Brecht my last quarter in college,” he explains. “It needed something with a bit more 'arghhh!' for the last act. My father had bought an accordion for $15 at a garage sale…” Webley has since worn out eleven accordions in the last eight years.

What makes Jason Webley's shows so compelling is the way he involves the audience. He'll answer cell phones and play for the caller, lead a conga line and pass out plastic bottles with pennies in them for a sing-along. Some of his songs can bring a tear to your eye, while others will make ever the shyest wallflower dance like a drunken Russian.

Webley tours relentlessly, performing in Russia, The Netherlands, Germany, Australia and the Ukraine, as well as most of America. He has play such prestigious venues as Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival, the Glastonbury Festival and Burning Man. Traditionally, he usually takes the winter off from performing, vacationing in Central America or Asia, but not this year. “I think most of my life I never noticed the seasons too much,” he says. “They were this external thing that happened in spite of my life and plans. It has been nice to allow them to dictate what I do for a while, but in some ways it was driving me crazy.”

Jason Webley performs Feb. 25 at the Weary Traveler (1201 Williamson St, Madison)
