Bobaflex

An interview with guitarist/vocalist Shaun McCoy
by Aaron Manogue
April 2011

We’re all swamped within the information age and bombarded with less than adequate bands that spew out music just to keep their record label at bay. However, very seldom do we have the pleasure of hearing a band stay true to their fans and themselves without ever selling out. In a nutshell, the aforementioned describes one of the most genuine hard rock bands out there today. The guys in Bobaflex have been in the business for years now, and through struggles inside and outside the industry, they’ve managed to stay relevant and remember how to play their trademark, soothe your soul one minute, kick your ass the next, rock and roll. Maximum Ink sat down with Bobaflex guitarist and vocalist Shaun McCoy to talk about what they’ve been up to and what they have in store this summer for our ears’ pleasure.

Maximum Ink: What’s Bobaflex been up to for the past year or two?
Shaun McCoy: Well, a little ways back our record label went bankrupt, so we ultimately had to fight a legal battle with regard to the t-shirts and touring. Once we got through that, we started to record a new album called, Hell in My Heart. We paid for the album, for every recording, and for the producer ourselves. Right now we’re working on a late spring, early summer release.

Brian “Head” Welch

An interview with former Korn guitartist Brian "Head" Welch
by Aaron Manogue
October 2011

Everyone has heard the story of talented musicians falling to the temptations of drugs and alcohol, and seeing some of the best musicians of our time falling too early. This was the case for one of the past decades biggest metal guitarists of our time. The only difference here is that this extremely talented musician was fortunate enough to get the help he needed, and get back to writing music before it was too late. Brian “Head” Welch, former guitarist and co-founder of the legendary band Korn, is back at it with new music. And for anyone who has ever had an addiction of any type, his story is one to admire. Not only is he back, he is back and hotter than ever with a new single titled “Paralyzed” out and an EP due out in early 2012. Maximum Ink’s Aaron Manogue spoke with Welch about his new EP, how finding Christianity has affected his music and if he’d ever consider rejoining Korn.

Maximum Ink: Tell me about your first single off of your upcoming 2012 EP, “Paralyzed.” Where did it come from and what is it about?
Brian “Head” Welch: Jason Rauch, who’s producing it and who co-wrote it, and he came to me with the idea and kind of the rhythm. Then I just added my stuff on it and then we just hooked back up. I remember when we were in the studio and he’s like “Alright, we need to do the middle section now.” So I suggested splitting up so we went to different rooms, because we were in his studio. We went to different rooms and I came back like a minute and a half later and he goes, “You got it, huh?” and I just said “Yup!” So it was really simple just like that and trust me they’re not all like that.

Black Label Society

an interview with Zakk Wylde
by Angela Villand
May 2011

We caught up with Zakk Wylde while he was in Southern California, hanging out with family, getting ready for the upcoming Uranium Tour that kicks off this month. The Armageddon of Black, as he affectionately calls it, fires up the Black Label “Armada” on the fourth of this month and lands at the Majestic Theater in Madison on May 27 in support of the new Black Label Society album “The Song Remains Not The Same,” out on May 10, 2011.

MAXIMUM INK:
Recently, on your Twitter, you shared a photo of the Misfits Skull with the Bieber hair, with the caption “I’ve got Beiber Fever! And the only thing that will cure it…is More Cowbell!”  I lost it, when it saw that; couldn’t stop laughing.
ZAKK WYLDE:
A buddy of mine sent that, and I was laughing my ass off. Dan Cantor, who is the guitar player with Justin Bieber, actually has a Zakk Wylde Les Paul, so we kept in touch with Dan, and stuff like that. It’s hysterical, we just keep cracking up laughing, because the whole point of it is – you know, Dan’s playing the guitar, and when all the Justin Bieber fans see me, they go “Look at that guy, he must be a fan, he’s playing a Dan Cantor guitar!” (Laughs) It’s awesome, man.  But it’s cool, Dan’s good people, and he’s out there kicking ass with Justin Bieber.  It’s hysterical.
