Athena Lee

Athena

Interview with Drummer Athena Lee
by Tina Hall
May 2011

Athena is, without a doubt, one of the best, and perhaps well renowned female drummers. While she’s known as Tommy Lee’s little sister, she is also a great drummer in her own right, being the first female drummer in history to be nominated for the L.A Music Awards. She recently signed on to Rockett Drums Works (owned by Rikki Rockett of Poison) and Regal Tip Drumsticks. Not one to be limited to music, she is also working on the upcoming television show, Ex-Wives Rock and penning her first book. Maximum Ink sat down with her recently to find out what her fans can look forward to next.

Maximum Ink: You have said that when growing up with Tommy, there was never a dull moment. Do you think his outlook on things left a lasting impression on you? What would you say is your fondest memory from your childhood?
Athena: Of course. We were just really weird, funny kids. I have a lot of fond memories. I can remember being in my crib and getting a Lucy (Peanuts) doll for my birthday. I loved that thing and a blue stuffed dog I had forever. He was so ugly and destroyed, but I loved him. I also loved the smell of Halloween, all of it pumpkins, masks, wax lips, candy, and I still do.

Atomic Bitchwax

Atomic Bitchwax

an interview with drummer Keith Ackerman
by Jeff Muendel
October 1999

I got to talk to Keith Ackerman, drummer of The Atomic Bitchwax , about his band, their guitarist, Ed Mundell (who also plays in Monster Magnet), and their upcoming tour. The Atomic Bitchwax are a jam-driven hard rock group with sparse vocals, a taste for trippy guitar effects, and extended song structures. Hailing from New Jersey, this band plays heavy metal in the old school way without pretense and at high volume.

Maximum Ink: How did the band come up with the name The Atomic Bitchwax?
Keith Ackerman:
One day when we were first jamming, I came down to the rehearsal hall and the guys said “Tell us the first word that comes to your mind!” I said “Bitch.” Evidentally, Ed (Mundell) had chosen the word “atomic” and Chris (Kosnik) had chosen the word “wax.” Put it all together and you’ve got…

Madison's Awesome Car Funmaker on the Cover - photo by Rokker

Awesome Car Funmaker

by Mike Huberty
July 2005

Appealing and unpredictable, the high-energy rock n’ roll of Madison’s Awesome Car Funmaker is just plain infections. They recently celebrated their two-year anniversary, a feat in this modern age of bands.

ACF’s influences, which range from Queen and These Arms Are Snakes to 60’s soul music, are witnessed throughout their manic stage show that features the band dressed in quasi-Mod, loudly colored suits. Fueled by bassist Justin’s spastic pogoing and lead singer/guitarist Ryan’s over-the-top guitar hero posturing, Awesome Car Funmaker engage the audience with moments that range from the gorgeously saccharine sing-a-long tune, “Part Two,” one of the band’s current favorites to play, and the bombastic, metallic stomp of “Torture Chamber,” to the ridiculous cover of Journey’s epic “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).”
