Zeroed Hero

Zeroed Hero

An interview with vocalist Dean Kesler and bassist Chris Franczek of Zeroed Hero
by Mike Huberty
April 2018

Vocalist Dean Kesler and bassist Chris Franczek are long-time collaborators and musicians in the Madison scene. Their latest project, ZEROED HERO, adds Alison Margaret on keyboards and vocals and Tony Kille on drums. The band’s new album Love Letters To A Mannequin is guitar-driven alt-rock that ranges from the crunchy (“Precipice”) to the Americana-flavored (“Read Just Like My Heart”) to the metallic (“Dog Years”). Many of the songs have a tight riff-y sound from a careful interlocking of the rock n’ roll standard guitar, bass, and drums, but that’s important because it exposes the lyrics before they open into powerful and dramatic choruses. Kesler’s voice is sweetened by Margaret’s female harmonies that add a certain melancholy to the songs. Local axeslinger Dain Di Mattia (from MICHAEL ALEXANDER & BIG WHISKEY) handled much of the guitar work on the record, but Steve Truesdell will be handling the duties live. File Love Letters under Modern Power Pop that blends the earnest conviction of 70s rock with the precise sonic power of late 90s alternative.

Black Star Riders

An interview with vocalist Ricky Warwick
by Sal Serio
April 2018

Black Star Riders formed in 2012 when the most recent members of Thin Lizzy were writing and recording new songs, but decided that it would not be appropriate to release the upcoming album (2013’s ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’) under the Thin Lizzy name. Vocalist Ricky Warwick chose the “Black Star Riders” moniker after being inspired by the movie “Tombstone” (1993) which features an outlaw gang of the same name. The current line-up of Black Star Riders is: Warwick, with guitarists Scott Gorham and Damon Johnson, bass player Robbie Crane, and drummer Chad Szeliga. Touring in support of their 3rd album, ‘Heavy Fire’, the hard rocking group hits the Upper Midwest for the following dates: Mon. April 2 at the Minneapolis Armory (w/ Judas Priest & Saxon); Tues. April 3 at the Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee (w/ Judas Priest & Saxon); Thurs. April 5 at the Resch Center in Green Bay (w/ Judas Priest & Saxon); Fri. April 6 at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL; and Sat. April 7 at Potawatomi in Milwaukee (w/ Saxon).

Trapt's Chris Taylor Brown Strumming His Way into Madtown. An Acoustic Experience at The Annex/Red Zone.
by Al Brzostowski
March 2018

Chris Taylor Brown, Vocalist from California -based Trapt, is currently on tour doing an all-acoustic set list. Drum box backed and stripped down vocals and acoustic guitar, the sting of fan favorites are still felt through his playing.  Songs like “Black Rose”, “These Walls” and “Too Close” still carried the original tracks’ emotions. “Headstrong”, “Echo” and the night closer, “Who’s Going Home with You Tonight” had evolved into a more soulful version than the original.

Last night I had the experience to chat with Chris before hitting the stage at The Annex at the Red Zone in Madison.

Madcity's own Anna Wang - photo by Anna Wang

Anna Wang

an interview with Madison songwriter Anna Wang
by Teri Barr
March 2018

Anna Wang is no stranger to the area music scene. She made a big impression as lead singer and main songwriter for Anna Wang and The Oh Boys!, and in a 2012 Maximum Ink interview talked about sharing the power of songs, mixed with the joy of pop music, while taking on the world with her band. Some scheduling issues and line-up changes meant the eventual end of one project, some time off, and the creation of Tortoise and the Finch. Her talent helped take this duo to the top of the Project M Singer-Songwriter Competition in 2017. But even this success was short-lived. Anna is now a solo artist, but if you think it means she is quietly playing in a corner all alone, you don’t know Anna. She just released a new album of electronic-pop, and commands your attention—whether you are listening to her CD or watching her live—Anna is playing an entire band of instruments and every note of her songs. She’ll be joining with several other musicians, and sharing what she’s learned as part of a multi-part workshop, “The Six Questions of Songwriting,” starting Tuesday, March 6, 2018, 6:30-8:30 pm at 702 East Johnson Street in Madison, as well as solo shows including one she is really looking forward to at ArtIn on East Washington Avenue in Madison on May 17th. Keep reading to learn how Anna feels about being in this current place where she is in control of her music, and her life.
