Summer has come and it is once again time to pay homage and blood sacrifice to the mosquito god. Which vein will you sacrifice?

KAINALU
The band’s name is Kainalu and roughly translates as “ocean waves”, but it’s song titles like “Kamikaze Mushroom Palace,” “Bends Like Oragami,” and “Lotus Gate” that really set the tone for this Madison based psychedelic funk recording project. Rooted in the Japanese Hawaiian heritage of the group’s multi-instrumentalist helmsman, Trent Prall, the band’s music has proven to hold both local and international appeal. Kanilu has charted on iTunes in Mexico, Portugal and Brazil in addition to radio plays in Australia, Mexico City and Paris. Join in their new album release festivities on 6/20 at High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI with Static Panic. kainalu-music.com

SHAWN MENDES
Although I was not a fan at the time when he became the youngest artist to have a debut song in the Billboard Top 25, Shawn Mendes has become one of my guilty karaoke pleasures. His most recent, a self titled third album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and later garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. If you need a little more Mendes in your life, find him live on 6/25 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, WI. www.shawnmendesofficial.com

Freekbass

Album title: All the way this. All the way that.
Record Label: Color Red
Rating: 9

With his backing group, The Bump Assembly, Freekbass’ seventh full length album harnesses the funk forward Cincinnati sound and merges it with universal influences from the 70s through tomorrow. This gyrational groove goodness not only shows off the innovative styling of Freekbass including his signature double thumb strumming technique and driving rhythms, but gives him plenty of room to show off wild costumes and vigorous live show. Maneesh de Moor - Icaro

Maneesh de Moor - Icaro

Maneesh de Moor

Album title: Icaro
Record Label: Pachamama Records
Rating: 10

An Icaro (or sonic pattern) is a melody traditionally received by a shaman journeying in the spirit world. The Icaros contained here are contemporary interpretations of Icaros derived from Shipibo tradition, and altered to be played on special flutes, made of Tobacco branch and ancient wood. The recordings are nested amid original field recordings of the Amazon jungle by night and are highlighted by instruments like the ‘Chakapa’, an instrument made of leaves from the ancient Chakapa bush, which provides a very trance-like groove mated to the heart beating rhythms of a shaman’s drum. Superbly done!

SOOHAN - Trānsmūtō

SOOHAN

Album title: Trānsmūtō
Record Label:
Rating: 10

Accelerating his unique musical style of amalgamating global snippets formulated from a persistent multi cultural appreciation, SOOHAN’s infectious 7th album, named from the Latin trāns- + mūtō (“change, alter”), uniquely splices kitchy American pop music with regional dance and folk music into bass heavy mixes. His sample heavy electronic experiments are clever and entertaining to listen to, as well as catchy and danceable (if ya wanna get up and shake!)
