The Sword - Used Future

What began as groovy galloping guitar driven stoner rock has taken nods towards classic heavy rock and added bluesy brambles to their vintage mileage as this Austin, TX band rides across endless highways headed towards often psychedelic horizons with a used future destination.

Beefus - Busted Teeth Fandango

Beefus is a musical collective from Madison, known for their quirks, strangeness and unique perspective. This time around there is more steel, grass and twang (and perhaps inbreeding?) than before, but the lyrical content is still twisted, kitschy and head scratching enough to make even Captain Beefheart proud. Remember, the moon always shines when it’s moonshine!

Twenty One Pilots - Trench

Bands with 2 billion+ hit videos are hard to ignore. That being said, this groups bizarre yet amazingly attractive conflagration of alt rock, hip hop, metal, and singer songwriter swings are often as confounding as they are comforting. But it works! Trench definitely captures their signature sound and approach, but simply isn’t quite as high strung as prior releases. It is still lyrically provoking though and offers a bunch of great songs and potential mega hits.

Turkuaz - Life In The City

Expressive and fun, this nonet from Brooklyn will blow your socks off with their energy poppin’ horns, strong jams and catchy rhythms. Dripping with splashes of funk, rock, alternative and R&B this group brings momentous energy and presence to Life In The City as well as their live shows wherever they may be found. SOOHAN - Trānsmūtō

Accelerating his unique musical style of amalgamating global snippets formulated from a persistent multi cultural appreciation, SOOHAN’s infectious 7th album, named from the Latin trāns- + mūtō (“change, alter”), uniquely splices kitchy American pop music with regional dance and folk music into bass heavy mixes. His sample heavy electronic experiments are clever and entertaining to listen to, as well as catchy and danceable (if ya wanna get up and shake!)

Freekbass - All the way this. All the way that.

With his backing group, The Bump Assembly, Freekbass’ seventh full length album harnesses the funk forward Cincinnati sound and merges it with universal influences from the 70s through tomorrow. This gyrational groove goodness not only shows off the innovative styling of Freekbass including his signature double thumb strumming technique and driving rhythms, but gives him plenty of room to show off wild costumes and vigorous live show. Too Many Zooz - ZombieEP

Taking their toot skootin brass barrage to a timely theme, these subway gawds, ever honing their turbulent tempos and breakneck boogies, have concocted the story of a fictional band, called The Submariners. As they travel to Pensacola, Florida to play a show at ZombieFest, this band realizes that the fateful music festival is ground zero for a real life zombie outbreak. This story follows SwitchBlade, NoBoy, and DoDo on their journey to Zombiefest a spooky destination, fraut with freaks, funk and devastation. Don’t get caught with your brains out!

FKA twigs - Magdalene

Poignant, compelling, artistic and unique, English singer and songwriter FKA twigs’ second studio release emanates emotions and rhythms as bare and brilliant as a crystal clear star lit sky. These strikingly sad, forlorn and heartbroken compositions are peaked by the ethereal vocals and biting lyrical content. Meticulously subtle yet miraculously expressive. Look for her in the feature film “Honey Boy.”

Basher Toe - Pasifika

Tribal dance music has been a favorite of mine for years and this release from Israeli bass producer Basher Toe (aka Chen Beer) is one of the hottest things I have heard in a long while! He spent time studying various ancient pacific cultures, aboriginal music styles, and tribal storytelling techniques, which he then combined with organic samples, hand instruments, and didgeridoos. These elements percolated, blossomed and erupted masterfully within the raw intensity of modern bass music to produce these 5 top notch tracks.
