The Charlatans UK join forces with Ride for a North America tour

Thirty years ago, The Charlatans UK and Ride co-headlined two now-legendary concert events in the British seaside towns of Brighton and Blackpool. 2023 finds them once again trading headline slots in their North American tour, this time performing classic albums in full – The Charlatans UK’s landmark sophomore LP, “Between 10th and 11th” and Ride’s debut masterpiece, “Nowhere.” Christened the Between Nowhere tour, Madison is incredibly fortunate to have these two iconic groups play the Majestic Theater February 8th.

The Charlatans UK’s, “Between 10th and 11th” featured the band’s biggest US hit to date, “Weirdo,” and arrived at the height of the jaw-dropping Madchester scene that included The Happy Mondays, James and Stone Roses. More a British phenomenon than American, it was a unique combination of danceable psychedelia and Northern Soul. Frontman Tim Burgess, who became a Twitter celebrity with his pandemic-inspired Listening Parties, captures the untethered effervescence in the band’s baggy tag-team dreaminess whose staunch, weathered longevity provides a rousing optimism shimmering in organ-fueled grooves, catapulting bass and percussion and splendidly leathery fretwork.

Formed in Oxford England in 1988 Ride’s 1990 full-length debut, “Nowhere,” has been hailed as one of shoegaze’s all-time greatest albums. The band broke up in 1996, guitarist Andy Bell joined Oasis as their bassist and drummer Loz Colbert logged time with The Jesus and Mary Chain and Supergrass before the quartet reformed in 2014. Originally executing snarled textures inundated with head-rushing plunges from distorted guitar-pedal noises, the band’s two songwriters moved in separate directions exploring more folk-rock conventions before disbanding. With a self-instigated reissue campaign reestablishing their place as noise-pop pioneers, the band’s reunited efforts blend their early sound with tamed haze and enhanced harmonics, incorporating contemporary influences of indie-rock with their always keen sense of dynamics and melodies.
