Eclectic Vibes - October 2013

CD/DVD Micro Reviews by Andrew Frey

BOO! When?
The only thing that was truly scary this year so far was how early stores put out Halloween and X-mas decorations. I think some stores put ‘em out shortly after the 4th of July. And really, isn’t the hot hot summer the time you are thinking of ghosts, goblins and tree ornaments? Masks and costumes when it’s 111 degrees? Anyway, my Halloween show pick this year comes in the form of the off-the-hook psychedelic indie pop group, Of Montreal, who are headlining Nightmare On King Street at the Majestic Theater in Madison. Well-known for their often outlandish and outrageous stage shows, they should be well-versed on handling whatever antics the crowd may treat them to. Their new album, Stream Lousy with Sylvianbriar, hits the streets on 10/8 www.ofmontreal.net

Don’t Forget The Beats!
Make SURE to save some extra energy for the Sat after Halloween (11/2), because that’s when the fabulous Steampunk-friendly trio, Beats Antique, will be appearing at the Majestic Theater in Madison. (Unless you go catch them ON Halloween in Minneapolis at Mill City Nights) Dubstep and Glitch meet Bellydancing beats and gypsy rhythms as this highly-acclaimed experimental world fusion group brings us their “Animale Mechanique” tour. It will cover 35 locations in North America and end with a 36th once-in-a lifetime show in front of The Pyramids in Egypt on the Winter Solstice. Is there a party bus heading to that show? beatsantique.com?

Papadosio Premonitions
The ever-inspiring North Carolina group, Papadosio, brings their Fall Tour 2K13 our way this month. These 5 musicians greet the technology age with flowing electronica mixed with prog rock, dance, folk, funk and sublime evolutionary messages for unity. 9/10 at Miramar Theatre in Milwaukee, 10/10 at Majestic Theater in Madison. www.papadosio.com

Gettin’ the Griz
The DJ known as Griz calls his vision of electronic music Electric Soul or Future Funk. His most recent release, Mad Liberation, shows off this love of 60s and 70s funk and soul with sweet samples from that era which grant a revitalizing quality to the old sound. Prepare for Griz to rage some live saxophone with his non-stop grooves and mad stage show on this The Rebel Era Tour. Appearing with Two Fresh and Anvil Smith at Epic Events Center on 10/23 in Minneapolis, MN, Orpheum Theater on 10/24 in Madison and Aragon Entertainment Center on 10/25 in Chicago, IL mynameisgriz.com/

Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestra

Gipsy Manifesto
Record Label: piranha
Review published: October 2013
Rating: 10

The Balkan brass band movement has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding musical uprisings of the past several years and the Markovic’s have been unabashedly at the forefront of things. This legendary father and son virtuoso trumpet duo hail from Southern Serbia, but thanks to the saturation of multicultural elements into their music, they have been penning numerous genre-defining and explosive Balkan Gypsy Brass dance hits over the years while seeing their popularity skyrocket thanks to DJs around the world remixing all things Balkan into their electronica. Balkan beats get the dance floor percolating and there is a lot of fantastic percolation happening on Gipsy Manifesto!

Making music for a cause is always admirable, and the cause here is of utmost global importance.
