Eclectic Vibes - July 2014

CD/DVD Micro Reviews by Andrew Frey

Dick Dale

Festival Tip of the Month

Always invest in a quality air mattress (or cot). It could save your ass (or back or neck). I recently went to a week-long festival with an inferior quality air mattress and the whole experience suffered because of it.

Farina-nating

Voted as one of the top DJ’s in the world by URB, MUZIK and BPM magazines, and creator of the Mushroom Jazz series, Mark Farina, has thrilled crowds globally for many years with his downtempo jazz and Chicago-style house music, entertaining over 1 million fans per year. You can be part of this illustrious crowd on 7/11 at the High Noon Saloon in Madison. www.djmarkfarina.net

Surf’s Up!

Known as The King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale pioneered the surf music style starting in the 1950’s and continues to promote, progress, and define it to this day. One of his early successes came from working closely with Fender to produce custom made amplifiers, including the first-ever 100-watt guitar amplifier! Inducted into the Musical Hall of Fame in 2009, Dick Dale is certainly one you won’t want to miss. Catch the wave on 7/20 at High Noon Saloon. dickdale.com

BT or Not to BT

The list of accomplishments for platinum-selling artist, visionary producer, film composer, and technologist BT is quite impressive: composing scores for films The Fast and the Furious, Partysaurus Rex, Go, Stealth, and Oscar-award winning Monster. He is also known for pioneering a production technique he calls stutter edit, a technique that consists of taking a small fragment (or fragments) of sound and then repeating rhythmically. In 2010, BT was nominated for a Grammy Award for his studio album “These Hopeful Machines” in the “Best Electronic/Dance Album” category. Find out what he is up to these days when you see him on 7/24 at Liquid Lounge in Madison with openers Christian Burns and Antics. www.btmusic.com/

Beat Fatigue - Malfunktionality Part One

Beat Fatigue

Malfunktionality Part One
Record Label: Adapted Records
Review published: July 2014
Rating: 8

So many of my favorite things all rolled into one! Clever guitar jams are imbibed with funky bass lines and blues stamina while pushed out on the dance floor with groovy electronics. This Amsterdam based DJ, producer promises much more to come with Part 2!

Mark de Clive-Lowe - Church

Mark de Clive-Lowe

Church
Record Label: Mashibeats/Ropeadope
Review published: July 2014
Rating: 9

Sophisticated avant soul jazz-tronica that sizzles with intensity. This New Zealand born musician, DJ and producer (who now resides in LA) started playing piano at age 4 and has continued his musical exploration ever since! Layers of flavors, rhythms and instrumentation are conjured for each composition and flow through several diverse styles as well as musical collaborators.

Entheogenic - Enthymesis

Entheogenic

Enthymesis
Record Label: Universal Symbiosis Records
Review published: July 2014
Rating: 10

An excellent 8th studio album for Entheogenic! Sliding grooves and moody ambient space-scapes glide into faster psytrance rhythms and brain scratching Terence McKenna platitudes. Mesmerizing trance within quirky glitch and magnificent hubub.

David Starfire - Awakening

David Starfire

Awakening
Record Label: Amrita Recordings
Review published: July 2014
Rating: 9

A world-renowned producer/composer/multi-instrumentalist/DJ that has worked with numerous electronic musicians as welll as had songs featured in many TV, cable, movies and video games. Awakening is an invigorating juxtaposition of ethnic grooves throbbing with exquisite electronic psydub buoyancy.
