Bobby Weir and the Wolf Brothers
Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his solo debut, “Ace,” Bobby Weir along with the Wolf Brothers and the Wolfpack play Madison’s The Sylvee February 28th for a night filled with funky country grooves and stoked folk-gospel jams.
“Ace,” is essentially a Grateful Dead recording in everything but name with Weir leading his bandmates through several songs which had already been road-tested by them, including what would become Weir’s signature song, “Playing In The Band.” An outlet for Weir’s growing catalog of solo compositions, “Ace,” also marked the songwriter’s long-running collaboration with lyricist John Perry Barlow and includes early standouts “Cassidy” and “Looks Like Rain.” The recently released 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition includes a new remastered mix of, “Ace,” and a complete live performance of the entire album taken from Weir and the Wolf Brother’ Radio City performances last year.
A super-tight unit comprised of multi-Grammy producer Don Was on bass, longtime RatDog drummer Jay Lane and Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, Weir and the Wolf Brothers flesh out their sound with the jaw-dropping Wolfpack, a string and brass quintet featuring Alex Kelly, Brian Switzer, Adam Theis, Mads Tolling and Sheldon Brown plus Barry Sless on pedal steel. The expanded ensemble brings Memphis soul and Texas blues to an already rich tradition of modern rockin’ Americana.
Based on previous setlists, be prepared for a extended evening with overloaded sets ranging from crowd-pleasing Dylan to half-expected Dead. Choice nuggets from Merle Haggard, John Prine and Marty Robbins have popped up last year with flashes of jazz and cosmic bluegrass uniting old favorites and well-remembered treasures. A glorious road-warrior joy from fellow travelers on a musical journey, Weir and friends bring collaborative talent and encyclopedic experience for a unique and memorable concert every time.
