Ohio Tavern

Thanks and gratitude to all the Isthmus readers who voted the Ohio Tavern top karaoke spot in the 2017 Annual Manual. That’s where I (and an occasional friend) host Cosmic Star Karaoke every Saturday night starting at 8 p.m. It is always quite an occasion. This is karaoke like none other as it features a great collection of regulars, awesome crowd participation, a great support staff, fun lighting and of course fantastic tacos served till midnight. See ya there!

I have been looking forward to this one all summer! The Shangri La Festival is always the high consciousness culmination of my year and this one will be no different. Cool festival activities plus so many amazing musical acts! I am super excited to see (among others) Polish Ambassador, SunSquabi, Satsang, Skydyed, Nahko, Mike Love, Paula Fuga and of course Wookiefoot! 9/7-9 at Harmony Park near Clarks Grove, MN.

When I was about 13 years old I bought my first Raven album. They were so rad! This trio from Canada offered crazy, over the top hard rock and heavy metal antics that excited my teenage mentality. Unbelievably, the original three are back together and writing new music. What started way back in 1974 has never stopped!  Feel the rage of Raven on 9/7 as part of the Full Terror Assault Open Air Fest in Cave-in-Rock, Il or on 9/8 at The Frequency in Madison, WI.

A musical prodigy that got signed to Geffen Records straight out of school at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California, Trevor Hall has produced a number of awe inspiring tracks and iTune topping releases. Currently he has a Kickstarter going for his new non-traditional album, The Fruitful Darkness. Designed as a year long release, supporters will receive 3 songs (w/cover artwork) on each of the next 4 quarters around the full moon, symbolizing the fullness of fruition from the dark sky of our consciousness. Find out what this consciousness brings us when he tours through on 9/8 at Shangri-La Festival and 9/21 at the Barrymore Theater in Madison, WI.

Electric Swing Circus

Album title: It Flew By
Record Label: Ragtime Records
Rating: 10

Ready for some sauntering 20’s swing songs wound up with gypsy-jazz guitar, electric double bass, and vibrant electro beats? The Birmingham based Electric Swing Circus is a 6-piece fusion of just this, combining contemporary with classic, while delighting UK festivals for years now. Fronted by a female double-act, they finesse and finagle 1920’s swing sensations with jazz, soul, rock, funk, disco and a lot of attitude. So much fun!

Switchkraft - Jandom Lobe

Album title: Jandom Lobe
Record Label: Adapted Records
Rating: 9

Dealing out their very own experimental bone wobbling bassed beats (called Switch Hop), this duo from the Gold Coast of Australia caught my attention immediately. Irreverent song structure approaches are infiltrated by glitched out samples and zany rhythmic combinations that provide ample pondering and pulsing which coincide with body motivating rhythms under a quirky back drop.
