Dan Baird and Homemade Sin

An interview with Singer/Songerwriter Dan Baird
by Tina Ayres
August 2018

Formed by Dan Baird of The Georgia Satellites and solo artist who brought the world the album Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired, Dan Baird & Homemade Sin offer up authentic classic rock sounds in a way seldom seen in today’s music industry. The newest album Screamer is slated for release October 10, 2018.

Maximum Ink: What was it like growing up in Georgia when you did? How do you think your early days helped shape you into the man you are today?
Dan Baird: Well, I never thought about it while it was happening, or really since, as everybody has to grow up somewhere. I was born at the end of 1953, so I’m sure I wasn’t too much different than anybody else.I grew up in Sandy Springs which wasn’t as wealthy as it would become. Pre 285 it was the sticks I guess. It’s all I knew. Our past cannot help but shape us, for good and ill. I’m not so circumspect as to divine what individual things helped me in becoming myself. It just happened all by itself.

The Jeff Carlson Band

The Jeff Carlson Band

An interview with Singer/Songwriter Jeff Carlson
by Tina Ayres
August 2018

Potomac Records newest artist The Jeff Carlson Band recently released their newest single, the power ballad Never Be Another You. Deeply influenced by the so-called glam and hair metal bands of the 1980’s the band likes to deliver up power ballads in the same tradition.

Maximum Ink: Can you tell us a little about what first peaked your interest in music?
Jeff Carlson
: What peaked my first initial interest in music was my mother took me to see Kiss in 1975, as well as Black Oak Arkansas-and I got to meet Jim Dandy Mangrum- the singer. He was the guy that David Lee Roth took everything from as far as looks and stage moves go. That made a HUGE impact on me as a kid! Kiss made a HUGE impact on me as well…they were just the coolest!
MI: Who were some of your influences?
JC: My influences…let’s see…

The Mascot Theory

The Mascot Theory

An Interview with Band Founder Erik Kjelland
by Teri Barr
August 2018

We are sitting at Erik Kjelland’s kitchen table in Madison, and it is pretty obvious; there is an album release show just around the corner. Boxes of re-branded merchandise for his band, The Mascot Theory (TMT), along with specially roasted coffee, cups, and posters featuring the band’s new, official line-up are piled in any used-to-be empty spots around the house. But most important, so are copies of the band’s new, freshly pressed CD.

As Erik and I talk, we are also listening to some songs off the disc he just-picked-up

Rich Meyer

An Interview with Grammy Nominated Highly Suspect's Rich Meyer
by Al Brzostowski
August 2018

Highly Suspect’s deep roots in blues progressions, crunchy guitars and aggressive drums are all packed into an eclectic form of rock and roll. With Johnny’s lyrics, you feel transported to a smoke filled room in a blues club, singing about heartbreak, politics and humanity.

The stage is backed with the letters “MCID,” which stands for “My Crew Is Dope.” The crew refers to both the audience and the revolving cast of friends that have a guest role such as DJ Redbees and Matt Kofos, along with members of the bands that open for them.

Each member is given their chance to shine during the set, and drummer, and twin brother to Rich….Ryan Meyer has a huge chunk of time blocked out for him to rock out, alone on stage. Then, like a magic act, Matt comes in to parallel Ryan’s beats, and takeover for a few. Nonetheless, an amazing experience to see in raw musicianship.

Ryan, has a moment to show more talent other than just backing vocals and bass. “Round and Round”, another sexy, blues inspired song, takes you on a journey, almost hypnoticatically.

Rich had a few moments after sound check to check in with us.

MoodTrain

An interview with Verge Manyen and Travis Ziegler of improvisational rock duo, MoodTrain
by Mike Huberty
July 2018

Making up songs on the fly is hard, but improvisation is in the soul of live music. It’s what brought GRATEFUL DEAD fans back show after show because they didn’t know what to expect from night to night. If music is emotion made sound, then improvisation is what happens when you explore those emotions intuitively and in depth. That’s what Madison drummer Verge Manyen and guitarist Travis Ziegler do in MOODTRAIN. It’s improvisational instrumental rock where Verge and Travis feed off each other to create something unique every single time. They just released their first album, “Great Lakes Airlines volume 1”, an entirely off-the-cuff 30-minute jam. They’ll be playing outside at the Cheba Hut in downtown Madison on September 7th for a free show at 4:30pm. I talked with Verge and Travis about the new record and the band.

Blacktop Mojo

Blacktop Mojo 2018

An interview with Singer Matt James
by Michelle Harper
July 2018

It’s not that throwing axes while drinking whisky is a bad idea. It’s just a better idea if you’re with Blacktop Mojo.
The guys from Palestine Texas (Matt James, Nathan Gillis, Ryan Kiefer, Matt Curtis, along with newest member, guitarist Chuck Wepfer from Milwaukee Wisconsin) are touring the country in support of their second album “Burn the Ships”. They just played their first festival, Rock fest, in Cadott Wisconsin, and joined rock’s elite by getting photographed and promoted by the infamous Lou Brutus. Blacktop Mojo’s down and dirty Texas grunge style is getting noticed, but not just for their original music. They do covers like no one else.
